Get ready to rotate! We've formulated three 45-minute sessions starting @ 9:30a on the morning of Friday, October 14, 2011 at Herman Miller. These sessions are designed to cover topics that your professors don't have the room to fit into your already over-scheduled curriculum, and every student will have the opportunity to attend all three.

Speaker 1: B. Carole Steadham, SDA/C, Hon. AIA

Learning to Market Yourself to Employers

Entering the design profession in 1983, Carole Steadham began her career in the design industry in Administration; Business Management, including supervision of support services: accounting and marketing; Human Resources; and, in 2001, as President of Placement By Design [PBD], a Placement Consulting Recruiting firm.

Through her experience in design firms, leading the Society for Design Administration [SDA] as National President, and serving for ten years with the National American Institute of Architects [AIA] Board of Directors in an Affiliate Relations position for SDA, Carole has acquired twenty-eight years of experience and a wealth of information to share with design industry professionals wishing to succeed in the Design Industry.

Since Placement By Design is exclusive to the A/E/C Industry, Carole’s expertise with new ideas for resumes, project lists and portfolios for the downturn in the design industry has proven to be invaluable to design candidates seeking employment and for maintaining professional documentation for the future.  Learning to “Market Yourself” is a valuable tool Carole can share with designers.

                        Speaker 2: Kelley Barnett, ASID

Harnessing the Power of the Intangible

A graduate of The University of Texas in Austin, Kelley is passionate about design, people, the Longhorns and ASID. Owner of Kelley Barnett Interiors in San Antonio, this friendly, outgoing NCIDQ certificate holder has recently been putting her skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to work by rallying fellow industry members to help an 18-year-old high school senior who was shot in a tragic road rage accident. Paralyzed from the neck down, he is unable to return to his family home because of its accessibility issues.

Kelley and her volunteer team have been renovating the home, coordinating all efforts and donations, so that the star basketball player can move out of the hospital and return to a sense of normalcy. The family of six has been shocked and amazed by the astonishing outpouring of professionals, volunteers, fundraising, and media coverage, but the overwhelming support reconfirms what Kelley, a former Membership Director and 2011-2012 President of the ASID Texas Chapter, has known about her colleagues years.

This benevolent project is not her first, however. Last fall the Austin-San Antonio Design Guide featured her work on the ASID San Antonio Design Community’s first-ever showcase in the Vidorra downtown hi-rise, the proceeds of which benefited the Wounded Warrior Family Support Center.

Kelley will relate her experiences with these design projects, discussing how using your knowledge to improve the quality of others’ lives and being a part of ASID not only opens doors, but also creates meaningful, life-long relationships that benefit you both personally and professionally.

Speaker 3: Lisa Barron, Allied Member ASID, RID & Rick Smotherman

Project Installations: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Have you ever thought about how all the furniture, furnishings, equipment, art and accessories actually get installed into offices, hotels, stores, and homes? Probably not, but it’s a critical part of the design process and one that is rarely addressed in school. Due to the fact that there are so many “moving parts” – both literally and figuratively – a lot can go wrong, which can cause move-in delays that result in cost overruns and very unhappy clients.

Interior designer at Dallas Design Group Interiors Lisa Barron and Rick Smotherman, Managing Partner at Precision Delivery Services, a receiving, warehouse and installation firm, will entertain and shock you with some true stories about some sticky situations, all while educating you about how to navigate this intricate process to handle the inevitable bump in the road. What kind of bumps do we mean? A few examples of some scary scenarios...
                        • Twenty-five percent of the framed artwork has arrived damaged and the installation is in one-week because the new hospital wing’s ribbon cutting ceremony is coming up.
                        • The furniture for the 5,000-sf residence is waiting at the warehouse, but the contractor is still installing specialty light fixtures because they were all backordered.
                        • Two days before the store’s grand opening, the cleaning crew had an accident, damaging three of the custom display cases.
